Conocimiento del etiquetado nutricional frontal en Argentina e impacto en la compra de alimentos
Knowledge of front nutritional labeling in Argentina and impact on food purchases
Abstract
Excessive consumption of calories, sugars, fats, and sodium is associated with non-communicable diseases. To address this, several countries have implemented front-of-package labeling. In Argentina, Law 27642 was enacted in 2021. This descriptive and cross-sectional study evaluated the knowledge level of the Law and its impact on food choices among 803 participants. Only 32.6% claimed to know about it, 29% were unaware, and 38% expressed doubts. Excluding those unfamiliar with the Law, 98% recognized the black seals, although deeper aspects revealed higher levels of unawareness. Knowledge was greater among individuals engaging in physical activity or following specific diets and varied by age and educational level. The most recognized seal was for sugars, followed by total fats, sodium, saturated fats, and calories, while precautionary legends were the least known. Although the most valued seals were sugars and total fats, 52% did not change their consumption habits, and front-of-package labeling ranked third-to-last as a purchasing factor. In conclusion, significant efforts are still needed. Greater dissemination and regulatory enforcement are essential to ensure compliance with the Law. The role of Nutritionists, alongside industry and government commitment, is essential.
